From the Director:
A very warm welcome to Mockingbird Theatre Company’s first official production as the theatre-company-in-residence at the beautiful Belconnen Arts Centre. A huge thank you to every person who has helped get us to this moment. With classes, workshops and now productions, we want to ensure that Belconnen has a thriving theatre scene well into the future. Just you being here at this production, further grows and supports that dream. Thank you. We have a fantastic season planned for 2025 as well as the new Mockingbird Too initiative showcasing slightly edgier plays as well as curated productions that we think local audiences will love. Please join our mailing list on our website to be kept up-to-date.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has been on the very top of my to- do list since I first saw the National Theatre Live production 12 years ago. The play is a massive ask for local companies with limited resources. But that is a challenge that I thrive on. From those limitations, you are forced to think outside the square and that is where exciting things happen. Coupled with this challenge, I wanted the perfect play to showcase what Mockingbird is all about – great plays, great stories, great actors. And I also wanted to show audiences the type of theatre I love doing. And any play I love needs a big heart regardless of its style. This play represents all of this and is my calling card to you.
The script offers nothing in the way of staging so what you see tonight is all from this weird little mind of mine. I wanted the ensemble to represent what is going on in Christopher’s mind and the parents and teacher to be ordinary people as seen through an extraordinary mind.
This production, indeed this whole venture, wouldn’t be possible without the support and guidance of the staff at Belconnen Arts Centre – Monika, Jack, Shan, Lynden and especially our guardian angel, Anni. My personal thank you to Liz St Clair Long for her unwavering belief in me, to Rhiley for all the encouragement and hours put in to making this all look as good as it can for me, to Steph for her insight and strong shoulders, to an incredible cast who have taken the near-impossible and turned it into reality. And to my Christophers – Ethan and Wajanoah: this simply wouldn’t be the production it is without your passion and talents. I wish nothing but greatness for you both.
Chris Baldock
THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME
Based on the best-selling novel by Mark Haddon
Adapted by Simon Stephens
ABOUT THE PLAY:
Since premiering in 2012, this extraordinary play has become a global theatrical phenomenon. Winner of both the Olivier Award and the Tony Awards for Best Play, as well as many others, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has become one of the most beloved and popular plays of the modern era.
Christopher, fifteen years old, stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight, and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain and is exceptional at maths, but he is ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and he distrusts strangers. But Christopher’s detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that turns his world upside-down.

Travis completed year 12 at Daramalan College, where he focused on digital film and media production. This is where his passion for acting became apparent.
Peter Fock – Ensemble
Peter has been treading the boards around Canberra for about 30 years. In that time, he has played roles ranging from Jack-in-the-box to Machiavelli, by Shakespeare and local playwrights (notably the extraordinarily gifted Rachel Hogan), from 10-minute plays to hour-long monologues, for theatre and screen. He has been nominated for and won awards. He was most recently Harry in Away (Canberra REP), and prior to that, Alfred Doolittle in Pygmalion (Tempo). He explored English accents in those roles, and in Curious Incident, he gets another go (or 3).
Peter is delighted to work with Mockingbird Theatrics and Chris Baldock in this production. The attention to detail has tested Peter’s talents and rewarded his desire for quality theatre in Canberra. He thinks we are lucky to have productions, companies and creative people of this calibre here. He’s proud to be a part of it and grateful for your support.
Anthony Mayne – Ensemble
Anthony plays Mr Shears and is a member of the ensemble cast.

During this time, he managed to receive 3 CAT nominations for Best Lead Male though maintains his duck batting average when it comes to awards.
Anthony was a founding member of the Moruya Red Door Theatre Company on the South Coast where he has Produced 14 plays and appeared in one or two of them. Be it treading the boards with SPAT, Box Hill Theatre Melbourne or in Canberra, his favourite role to date has been as the Queen of Hearts with Blue Cow Theatre Sydney…though the opportunity to work with Mockingbird in this production might see Mr Shears get the chocolates.
